OVERVIEW
The Challenge
The Museum of BBQ came to us with a delicious concept — a sensory-driven museum celebrating the sights, smells, and stories of barbecue, centered around Kansas City’s legendary BBQ culture. But to bring it to life digitally, they needed a website that was as engaging and interactive as the exhibits themselves. We were tasked with designing and building a sleek, custom site that covered five key pages, complete with ticketing functionality, a mobile-first layout, and playful, immersive design. Every detail had to reflect the spirit of BBQ — bold, flavorful, and fun.

01. Plan
How We Defined the End-User Experience
We started by immersing ourselves in the Museum’s concept and experience — from its bean-themed ball pit to its spice scent wall and everything in between. Our goal was to translate that sensory, in-person energy into a web experience that would excite visitors before they even walked through the doors. We mapped user flows for locals, tourists, families, and BBQ fanatics looking to learn more or book tickets. This phase also included planning for scalability and a flexible design system to grow with the museum’s future events and exhibits.
02. Design
Custom Designs & UI/UX Experiences
The design direction leaned into the smokey, saucy, and bold world of BBQ while keeping the UI clean and navigable. Each of the five pages was uniquely designed to evoke personality and place — mixing textured backgrounds, flavorful imagery, and playful typography with clarity and usability. Whether users were learning about the museum, exploring its sensory-driven exhibits, or purchasing tickets for their visit, the experience was crafted to feel warm, approachable, and uniquely Kansas City.
03. Development
Custom Built and Responsive on All Devices
The site was built on a custom WordPress framework with a tight, performance-focused backend. We developed a responsive layout that shines across devices, and included custom components for exhibit highlights, interactive features, and ticket purchasing. The build also included a custom header, footer, and mobile menu designed for intuitive navigation. While compact in scope, the site was built for impact — ready to attract press, drive attendance, and grow the museum’s digital presence alongside its physical one.
04. Launch
A New Website Experience
Once everything was tested and ready, we launched the new site with full analytics tracking, ReCaptcha v3 for form protection, and SSL encryption. We ensured smooth ticketing functionality, optimized page performance, and tested the experience across desktop and mobile to deliver the same playful spirit no matter where users were browsing from. The result? A standout digital home for one of Kansas City’s most flavorful new attractions.
